Can anyone tell me why Walter Brennan walked with such pronounced limp. Seems like he would limp worse in some movies and less in others. I often thought it was just a character thing for the movies but a while back one of the cable stations ran his old television series, The McCoys, and he had the limp there also. This is something I have wondered about for some time and have not found any info. on it. Would just like to know.

Hi Baby Sis,
Walter Brennan, who won more Oscars than any other male actor,
apparently acted his limp, but he did lose his teeth, and as legend as it,
hurt his vocal chords, during the War.
Hence, his distinctive voice, and toothless expression.
According to, the biogs, there is no mention of him hurting a leg,
and got through the War, unwounded.Best Wishes,
Keith- Oct 12th 2005
Baby SIs,
You might notice that in some of the movies he was in he didn't limp. Like My Darling Clementine, Bad Day at Black Rock, and Sergeant York. This was his trademark, and directors liked him in that character.
I'm sure there are other movies, but on the top of my head that is all I could think of.
Cheers B)

Hi
Walter Brennen appeared in more than 120 pictures and was one of Howard Hawks favourite actors appearing in six of that directors films. Originally he studied to become an engineer but dropped out and spent time as a hobo during the early paert of the century wandering around New England. During the Great War he served in the US Army and after being badly gassed lost all of his teeth, this would stand him ion good stead later. After the war he remained in Great Britain, France and Europe until he returned to the United States in the early 1920s. Apparently it was his intention to go to Guatamala and on the way he stopped off in Hollywood and in 1923 deciding to remain found work as a stuntman.
In 1925 he made his first appeance playing the King Vidor picture Wedding Night and after being noticed by Sam Goldwyn was offered the part of the one eyed ferryman in Barbary Coast. His already thinning hair and false teeth gave him the appearance of being older than he was and he was cast as grizzly old timers from then on. by 1940 he had perfected the role to such an extent that he was the first actor to win three Best Supporting Actor Awards.
He appeared in six pictures with John Wayne. Texas Cylone, Two Fisted Law, Dakota Red River Rio Bravo and as the villain in How The West Was Won.

Thanks for the info guys. Now I am going to have to watch some of his other movies to see him without the limp. This was just one of those little things that stuck in my head for a long time and I knew you guys would know the answer.
Thanks

Brennan won three Best Supporting Oscars, right? (1936: Come and Get It, 1938: Kentucky and 1940: The Westerner) Only the great Jack Nicholson has tied him (1975: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1983 (supporting actor): Terms of Endearment and 1997: As Good as it Gets.

IMO, old Walt should have won one for the role in which we got our shared name.
In fact, I thought that was by far his strongest performance.- Oct 14th 2005

Hi Stumpy! IMO Brennan's best performance was in The Westerner, with Gary Cooper. He was so riveting in his portrayal of Judge Roy Bean! He was also great in Sergeant York, a role in which everyone thought he would win his fourth Oscar. By the time of Rio Bravo, roles like his Stumpy character were just water off the old pro's back! Still enjoyable to watch him, though. Do you have the CD reissue of Brennan's two albums? They're on Collector's Choice. Brennan narrates over musical accompaniment. Folk kind of stuff, I think. He's no Frankie Laine, but then again--who is?!?

Hi,
What suprised me about good old Walt,
was when he was in HOW THE WEST WAS WON,
I didn't realise it was him the first time round!!
So different he was to his old roles, he stumped me!!!!!!,Best Wishes,

Hi
I agree about The Westerner. Some of Brennan's best roles were when he played a baddie particulary in My Darling Clementine and How The West Was Won. It is relatively easy to play the doddery old timer who is tuppence short of a shilling, as an example the roles of Stumpy and Groot are not that far removed. but a believable real nasty piece of work like Ike Clanton, or a menacing and to a certain extent gullible character like Roy Bean, shows what a fine actor he was.

Hi all,
I agree, that he was great in My Darling Clementine. And I too didn't recognisee him in How the West was Won, certainly must see that film again. And of course I do like him in his performances of old nice fellows in Red River and Rio Bravo. For a pity didn't see The Westerner.

Hi,
Just watched a Robert Ryan, 1951 film called BEST OF THE BADMEN,
Walter Brennan, was in it, and he certainly wasn't limping!!
In fact early on in the film, he is seen running like a good-un!!Keith

Hi
The Westerner is on our Channel 4 on Thursday 27th October.
The blurb says
'Gary Cooper finds himself in a tight spot when he's brought up before Walter Brennan's Judge Roy Bean. Brennan's oscar winning performance is a hugely enjoyable mix of guile and dark humour. Cooper's customary quiet strength is the perfect foil to Brennan'As to the respective qualies of each performance I agree with Stumpy you pays your money and you takes your choice, thats what make the world go round.

Seeing him as Old Man Clanton in My Darling Clementine still surprises me everytime I see it. After seeing him as such a lovable character as Stumpy in Rio Bravo, his Clanton role was so different. The way he revels in telling Wyatt that he killed James make that character so evil.
One of the best character actors ever.

Biography for
Walter BrennanBirth name
Walter Andrew Brennan
Height
5' 11" (1.80 m)
Mini biographyIn many ways the most successful and familiar character actor of American sound films and the only actor to date to win three Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, Walter Brennan attended college in Cambridge, Massachusetts, studying engineering. While in school he became interested in acting and performed in school plays. He worked some in vaudeville and also in various jobs such as clerking in a bank and as a lumberjack. He toured in small musical comedy companies before entering the military in 1917. After his war service he went to Guatemala and raised pineapples, then migrated to Los Angeles, where he speculated in real estate. A few jobs as a film extra came his way beginning in 1923, then some work as a stuntman. He eventually achieved speaking roles, going from bit parts to substantial supporting parts in scores of features and short subjects between 1927 and 1938. In 1936 his role in Come and Get It (1936) won him the very first Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. He would win it twice more in the decade, and be nominated for a fourth. His range was enormous. He could play sophisticated businessmen, con artists, local yokels, cowhands and military officers with apparent equal ease. An accident in 1932 cost him most of his teeth, and he most often was seen in eccentric rural parts, often playing characters much older than his actual age. His career never really declined, and in the 1950s he became an even more endearing and familiar figure in several television series, most famously "The Real McCoys" (1957). He died in 1974 of emphysema, a beloved figure in movies and TV, the target of countless comic impressionists, and one of the best and most prolific actors of his time.
